Philemon
As illustrated in Philemon 4 – 7, the faith and love of each group of Christians should be known and remarked upon by the other groups. The family of God is worldwide. Just as we seek out and desire connection with our far-flung physical families, the spiritual family is at least as important. Stories of the love toward all the saints acted out by others should bring great joy. The sharing of faith is enhanced by cheering for the efforts of others.
While Paul was in prison in Rome, he taught the gospel to a run-away slave, Onesimus. Coincidentally, the slave’s owner, Philemon, had been taught the gospel by Paul some years earlier. Despite their close relationship, Paul did not want to assume that Philemon would agree to Onesimus serving Paul during his imprisonment. So, Paul sent Onesimus back to Philemon with this letter of explanation. Paul was setting Philemon up to succeed in a difficult situation, just as all the faithful should for each other. Give others the opportunity to do the right thing.
