Familiar Passages Explained
“Every knee will bow, every tongue confess.” In the style of all New Testament writers who cited the Old Testament, when Paul quoted Isaiah 45:23 in Romans 14:11 and Philippians 2:9 – 11, he called to mind Isaiah’s context from chapter 40 onwards. Isaiah used “every” to mean “all the descendants of Israel” (45:25), whom Paul asserted were all the faithful (Romans 9:6). Paul’s point was that all the faithful will swear exclusive allegiance to the Creator, to the Word that became flesh, so don’t get hung up on the small stuff.
