Milk and Salt

1 Peter 2:2  “Desire the pure milk of the Word.”  The illustration, while not as negative as Hebrews 5:12 – 13, still refers to “babes.”  However, this was appropriate for this audience who were new Christians in Turkey.

Hebrews 5:12 – 13  “You have come to need milk and not solid food.”  Everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness.”  Examples of the “milk” subjects are given in 6:1 – 2.  Growth is essential if faith is to be acceptable to God.

1 Corinthians 3:2  “I fed you with milk and not with solid food for until now you were not able to receive it, and even now you are still not able.”  Paul’s proof that they were still not able is described in 3:3 – 4.  As the context keep going, growth is expected.

Mark 9:50  “Have salt in yourselves and have peace with one another.”  The illustration is the salt on a sacrifice which is a seasoning and a preservative.  So, the faithful are to be seasoned (witty, interesting) and well preserved (not corrupt).

Colossians 4:6  “”Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt.”  Be witty and interesting, but also gracious.
