All we know about John the Baptist may be found in these verses. God promised a forerunner for the Messiah through Isaiah (about 700 BC) and Malachi (about 400 BC). Jesus confirmed that John was the promised forerunner. John’s task was to raise awareness of the soon-to-come Messiah, to cause Israelites to prepare themselves for the soon-to-come eternal kingdom (which came in Acts 2).
